WASHINGTON—President Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He outlined a plan to move the United States Embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv to Israel’s Holy City.

“Today we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” Mr. Trump said from the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House. “This is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do. It’s something that has to be done.”

Since Israel’s re-formation in 1948, failed policy has restrained Israel from recognizing Jerusalem as the official Capital even though it is the nation’s most important city historically, economically, governmentally, and spiritually.

Many President’s have attempted the same move but without success.

Mr. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem isolates the United States on one of the world’s most sensitive diplomatic issues. It has drawn a storm of criticism, which swelled Tuesday night after the White House confirmed Mr. Trump’s plans.

Many foreign entities, including Pope Francis, the Chinese foreign ministry, Arab countries, and European leaders, strongly opposed the relocation.

Although the state of Israel was formed in 1948, the country has yet to receive its capital and is hopeful the President will be able to deliver on his promise.
